Chris Cross, 25 years a cashier, has a gold watch and little else. That rainy night, he rescues delectable Kitty from her abusive boyfriend Johnny. Smitten, amateur painter Chris lets Kitty think he's a wealthy artist. At Johnny's urging, she lets Chris establish her in an apartment (with his shrewish wife's money). There, Chris paints masterpieces; but Johnny sells them under Kitty's name, with disastrous and ironic results.

1943 - Thriller
Nazi spies use a stolen shortwave transmitter prototype to broadcast top secret shipping info to an offshore Japanese sub. To nab the spy ring, the Government has the West Coast's top radio engineers fired and shadowed to see if the Nazis recruit them to complete work on the prototype radio. Radio engineer Lew Deerhold, a resident alien without a job to pay for his adorable little ward Gina's life-saving operation, falls prey to the spy ring, and is swept up in a maelstrom of deceit and danger.

The movie has a couple of slightly macabre touches. The main character is the adopted son of an undertaker and even bears a coincidental resemblance to the wrestler called "The Undertaker." At one point he starts picking fights to give himself an excuse to shoot people. He does this to drum up business. There's another part where he and the old man find a mountain of dead bodies. The elder undertaker calls them "beautiful" and says "we've found gold." Pretty cool stuff.
