In Makrokosmos, George Crumb expands the possibilities of the piano beyond its limits. Various objects and the pianist's own hands serve to extract unpublished sounds from the instrument. Meanwhile, in the score, references to the zodiac, mythology and Christianity are interspersed with quotations from classical works and dedications to artists past and present.
