In 2000 Bush won the election thanks to Florida, the state that hung in the balance right to the end and which had a sufficient number of delegates to put him in the White House. Something similar occurred in 2004 with Ohio holding the balance. That state was won by a whisker: 51% to 49% of the votes in favour of the Republicans. Whispers of vote rigging were quite openly voiced in both cases.
In Florida in particular, dozens of court cases are still being presented by entire black quarters of the state which, either because the voting card never arrived or their election committees caused them problems of every kind, didn't manage to vote (against Bush, naturally). In Ohio, on the other hand, the vox pop talked of doctored voting machines (given the computerised system), and in fact the difference between the exit polls that gave Kerry as the sure winner and the miraculous turnaround at the last minute has never been explained by anyone. At least not up until now.
