Lecture "Familiarity and distance: the artistic relation of Andrea Mantegna and Giovanni Bellini", given by Caroline Campbell (director of Collections and Research, and Curator of Italian Paintings before 1500, National Gallery) on the 15th of February 2022. It is part of the series of conferences Francisco Calvo Serraller "Spring of Art. The Renaissance in 15th Century Europe", organized by Fundación de Amigos del Museo del Prado.

"Spring of Art. The Renaissance in 15th Century Europe"
The explosion of creativity in all areas of culture that the Renaissance produced made the 15th century one of the most fascinating moments in the history of European civilization. In Italy, the recovery of Antiquity through the study of literary sources and Greco-Roman works gave rise to a true reinvention of visible reality. Artists from the north followed different paths, but convergent in many ways with those of their counterparts from the south. On both sides of the Alps, new techniques, styles and genres were cultivated, new profane themes were represented and sacred subjects were renewed. Thanks to all this, the Renaissance has left us some of the most extraordinary works in the history of art. This course is dedicated to them and to the artists who created them.
