E' uno dei padri fondatori della Planetologia Italiana ed Europea. Responsabile per l'ESA dei programmi d'esplorazione del Sistema Solare, fondatore della sezione planetaria della EGU e direttore editoriale della rivista scientifica internazionale Planetary and Space Science. Ha ricevuto il NASA Special Award for Oustanding Scientific Achievements.

Presidente dell'Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, Ordinario presso l'Università degli Studi "La Sapienza" di Roma, si occupa di aspetti sperimentali della Fisica delle Particelle Elementari. Ha lavorato al CERN di Ginevra, all'esperimento BaBar a Stanford e ai Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso su esperimenti di Doppio Beta.
