Laureato in Scienze Geologiche presso l'Università La Sapienza di Roma , lavora presso l'Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia dal 1990, ove ha fondato il laboratorio di paleomagnetismo. Dirige il Dipartimento Ambiente dell'INGV dal 2016. Ha svolto attività di ricerca scientifica nel campo del magnetismo delle rocce e delle possibili applicazioni in vari settori delle Scienze della Terra.
