È Professore Ordinario presso l'Università La Sapienza di Roma e attuale Presidente dell'Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia. Geologo strutturale e interpretatore di sismica a riflessione, si occupa di geodinamica, in particolare delle asimmetrie globali, dei meccanismi che le determinano, e dell'origine della sismicità. E' stato ricercatore all'Università di Ferrara, associato all'Università di Bari e ordinario all'Università della Basilicata.
