Sonia Cristina Montecino Aguirre nació el 12 de noviembre de 1954. Estudió antropología en la Universidad de Chile, recibiéndose en 1980. Se doctora en historia de América por la Universidad de Barcelona. Se ha desempeñado como profesora de antropología y ha sido directora del Centro Interdisciplinario de Estudios de Género de la Facultad de Ciencias Sociales de esa misma universidad.
