In 2000 Bush won the election thanks to Florida, the state that hung in the balance right to the end and which had a sufficient number of delegates to put him in the White House. Something similar occurred in 2004 with Ohio holding the balance. That state was won by a whisker: 51% to 49% of the votes in favour of the Republicans. Whispers of vote rigging were quite openly voiced in both cases.
