Laureato in Fisica e in Ingegneria Elettronica, ha svolto attività di ricerca negli USA presso i Laboratori Bell e quindi presso la Scuola Normale Superiore dove è Professore Ordinario di Fisica della Materia e Direttore del Laboratorio di Nanoscienza (Laboratorio NEST).
